Metal Tags and acrylic paints

Yesterday I showed you how you might use acohol inks and metal tags ... today i thought I would use paint on the tag.

Before you start painting with acrylic paints on metal, rather than metal foil, you need to provide it with a base to 'fix' to.  I used Ranger glue and seal - it only needs a thin coat, but it helps the paint stay put!
You will acrylic paints, walnut stain distress ink, clear embossing powder and an embossed tag.  Because you are painting the embossed and debossed areas pick a folder that doesn't have too much detail.  I used a text folder (Lisa has lots of patterned folders to choose from), but patterned or floral folders work equally well.

Having let the glue and seal dry, paint the tag, using different paints for diferent parts of the pattern or words.

 Don't worry that it will look quite matt and flat when it is done.

Having let the paint dry thoroughly, take a sanding block or sanding paper to it and sand some, but not all the paint off, including in the debossed areas.

 Now cover the tag with walnut stain ink and let it dry thoroughly.

Add embossing ink, I use versamark, to the whole tag and cover in clear embossing powder, and then heat - carefully!  Unlike metal foil the tag will get hot and you can burn your fingers!  Once all the powder is completely melted let the tag cool. 

 You end up with a shiny, vintage looking tag.

Metal Tags and Alcohol inks

Lisa sells some fab metal tags, they come in boxes, with 2 sizes.

 They have a smooth unfinished surface, ready for you to play with.

 I decided to have a play with them and explore how versatile they are ... please excuse the photos - we have really poor lighting in our house!

So the first thing I did was apply alcohol inks, as they work perfectly with smooth, shiny surfaces.

 I used a blending tool and felt, but didn't use blending solution. 

 I applied several layers, leaving each to dry for a minute or so before applying the next, until I got the effect I wanted.

Gorgeous as the finished tag is, it needs a bit more ...

As the metal tags aren't very thick they are perfect for embossing, to add texture.

 I experimented with several folders to see the effects I could get.
 
And then decided to make  Christmas tag...

I embossed the tag, lining it up with the text I wanted...

Then I applied alcohol inks, as described above, giving it several coats to create a good depth of colour. 

Then I took a sanding block to the tag, sanding off the top coat of ink ...

So you get a burnished effect.

 You can take as much or as little as you want off ... you get a better shine the more you sand.

This tag will hang from my Christmas tree.

Halloween Cutie

Hi Kerry here, just popping on to show you all some more halloween inspiration, I have used the whimsy stamp Hazel, but as you know all of the whimsy stamps are cute and can be found on our Facebook Page, all you have to do is ask Lisa and she will take a picture of them all :-). The patterned paper is Bazzill Hallows Eve and can be found here in the shop or above on facebook.

Left handed card!!!

Hi all just popping on to show you some inspiration with Saturated Canary stamps which you can find here in the shop :-).  It's the first time I have ever used Saturated Canary stamps and wow they ink lovely and they are great for colouring in especially their hair.  Reason I have called this card left handed is, well I shall show you the pictures -

Be Afraid

Hi all Kerry here, I know it's been a few weeks, but life got in the way of crafting as it does, but all is calm now.  Thought I would pop on and show you some more halloween inspiration for our current halloween challenge and blog hop is here :-) lot's of prizes up for grabs so why not have a go, it finishes on Saturday evening.

Just to warn you I have a new camera and lets just say, I'm still learning, maybe I should read the huge booklet but no I like to learn the hard way lol lol

Think I would be scared if my daughter started reading all those books with skulls on them lol.

Trick or treat cones tutorial

The theme for this week's That Crafty Place challenge is Trick or Treat and i thought I would have a go at making treat cones for the girls'. 

 And as the DT were very keen to know how I had made them I have done this tutorial - its really easy!!

You need some 12x12 cardstock or double sided patterned paper.  The cone is made up of a triangle, 10cm x 18cm.
As I was using black cardstock and decorating it, I also used a triangle 9.5cm x17.5cm.

1. Butt the larger triangle up against the edge of the cardstock and draw round the triangle.  You might want to have a fiddle around before you start to make sure you position the first triangle so they all fit on!   Move the triangle round so its butted up against the edge of the last one and draw round it.  Repeat until you have a 4 triangle fan shape.
You will also need to have a tab on the edge of the last one so you can attach the edges of the triangles together.

2. Now score down the edges of the triangles and the tab ...

 

 3.  As I was using cardstock I decorated it using the smaller triangle as a template for the peices of design paper (Authentique Enchanted ). 

4. Now add adhesive to the tab, making sure you do it on the outer side so it fastens to the inner side of the triangle!!!  And join the sides to create your cone.

 

 You will notice that they don't go to the ends - that's becuase I was using a 6x6 pad ... but it doesn't matter because ...

 5. Now it is time to decorate the cone - you can do what ever you like, but this is what I did.
I used some orange webbing and added dst to it, before pleating it round the base of the cone.  It works better with the dst attached to the ribbon rather than the cone.

 Having pleated the webbing round I added some gingham ribbon and tied a bow.

 Then I repeated the process around the top - this time attaching the webbing using a mini stapler - it just gives it a better grip, necessary for small hands and lots of sweets!!!

And some more ribbon ...

before adding the images, Kraftin' Kimmie's Wicked Witch and Whimsy's Hazel.  I coloured them in using promarkers and copics.  The diecuts are all from my lovely DT friends - I don't really do Halloween so needed a little help on the diecut front.  But there is a fab range of dies in the shop.

If you don't want to make Halloween ones, they are great for holding small presents, chocolates, and little Christmas treats.

Corner Book Marker

 Hi everyone its Erin Here 

i'm here to show you how to make a Corner Book Marker 

First you need to have the following items 

Card-stock

paper 

craft knife 

craft punch 

Ribbon 

Ruler 

double sided tape

   

Starting with a piece of card-stock measuring at 

4" x 4" or 10cm x 10 cm

and another measuring in at 

2 - 3/4" x 2 - 3/4 " or 7cm x 7cm 

Mark center of three side's out of four  

score along the lines to meet at the middle

on either side 

so it looks like this 

Fold the flaps over to give you a winged look like this 

go back to the smaller square 2 - 3/4" x 2 - 3/4" 

and cut it diagonally

across as shown  

 you should have something like this ???

back the smaller cut off with some backing paper 

like so ...

this is what i am using to make it all up 

couple strips of backing paper to co on the front and back 

ribbon to make a bow ( i did use another ribbon after i took this picture ) 

face the bookmark down so the flap's are facing up over 

add one half of the smaller square cut's 

from the 2 - 3/4" x 2 - 3/4"

Add the other half to the front of the bookmarker 

like so ... 

Add your ribbon first then 

using double sided tape 

stick your strip of backing paper to your bookmarker

Choose and colour your image 

then cut it a little smaller then the bookmark

Tie the ribbon into a bow 

i then stuck the image to another circle 

and using other die cuts to make it a little bit more special 

and here she is sitting in her corner
